The pace at which the world is changing nowadays is truly staggering and it almost seems like it’s impossible to keep up. New rules, new technologies, new never-before-seen risks are popping up each day, making jobs harder than ever.
At Allianz UK, underwriters have to sort through mountains of documents, some as long as 600 pages, just to get a handful of answers. With up to 70 such documents, they spend two hours every week trying to track down information.
When things slow down then everyone feels it. Brokers, customers, and even junior underwriters who may not know specific things can feel left behind, especially when working remotely, with no expert on hand to help them out.
Meet Brian, the smart AI assistant
Allianz UK made a great tool called BRIAN to help their workers out. BRIAN is an AI who can understand all sorts of documents, and is great at retrieving specific information very fast.
After a fantastic test with over 190 people who asked almost 3,000 questions, BRIAN was officially launched. Now it’s helping underwriters all around the office find answers to some of their tough questions. The best part is that all of BRIAN’s answers come directly from the documents themselves, meaning there is less chance of them being wrong or misleading.

BRIAN the friendly helper, now and in the future
BRIAN is being used by 260 Property and Liability Underwriters at Allianz UK commercial offices, and there are plans to expand this to over 600 underwriters. BRIAN’s skills are not limited to just one department, so it will be expanding to new areas such as Claims soon.
“The main goal is to make people’s lives easier across the board by giving them an AI assistant that can help them get to the information they need, faster,” says Benjamin Blackie, Transformation Business Owner at Allianz Insurance, UK.
Why is the AI bot named BRIAN though? “Actually, it’s named after the first underwriter I ever worked with, that basically mentored and looked after me when I first started at Allianz,” says Ben. Working remotely these days isn’t ideal, but at least there is BRIAN to answer all questions around the office.
